Congratulations to James Durkan, from Meath Community Games, who has been selected to participate in the Youth on the MOVE programme 2016.
Youth on the MOVE (YOTM) is part of the NowWeMove Campaign, organised by the International Sporting and Cultural Association (ISCA). ISCA recognised and identified the need for more training for youth in the field of sport and events, and designed the YOTM project to help meet this need. The participants will learn how to organise events, projects and other initiatives in their local community, and how to generate awareness of the importance of physical activity/sports in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They will also help to deliver and organise physical activity events during MOVE week and other events associated with the NowWeMove campaign. YOTM and the NowWeMove campaign embraces the concept of Sport for All.
James is a second year student studying Physiotherapy in Trinity College Dublin. He is heavily interested and involved in GAA with his local club of Boardsmill. He is an advocate for physical activity.
James has been volunteering with both local (Boardsmill) and County Community Games for about five years now. He first got involved with the County when acting as a runner at the annual County Athletics day in Cushinstown a few years ago.
Ever since, he has been volunteering at various events and even refereeing a few football matches along the way when needed. At the end of 2014 he was elected Youth Officer of Meath Community Games and have been working in that role since, pulling friends in from college to increase the youth presence on certain events. James says “Last year was my first year volunteering at the National Festival in Athlone, where I co-ordinated the Gaelic Football competitions and will be definitely returning this year.”
