HSE Injury Units

Bumps, scrapes, bruises, sprains, cuts, fractures - when your child has an active lifestyle like taking part in Aldi Community Games, little injuries are part and parcel.  But does that always mean a trip to hospital?

Injury Units HSE Community Games
There are 11 HSE injury units across the country that treat adults and children over 5* for minor injuries including broken bones, dislocations, sprains, strains, wounds, scalds and minor burns that are unlikely to need admission to hospital. Staff in Injury Units perform x-rays, reduce joint dislocations, apply plaster casts and treat wounds by stitches or other means. Injury units report fast turnaround times and people are generally in and out in two hours.

Summer and autumn are particularly busy times for people playing sport and getting active so if you or any one in your Community Games Area do injure yourselves, attending an injury unit may cut down on your waiting time for treatment.

Patients can go directly to the Injury Unit or be referred by a GP. Each Injury Unit is linked to a Hub Emergency Department in an acute hospital. If a patient in an Injury Unit needs to be admitted to hospital they will be referred directly to linked hospital, in exactly the same way as if they had attended the Hub Emergency Department. Injury Units are reporting fast turnaround times for seeing and treating patients so people can save themselves long waiting times by attending Injury Units instead of Emergency Departments when it is appropriate to do so.

*Please note some Injury Units currently have higher age limits for the treatment of children. Check the list here.
