Area Information
What is an Area?
An Area is a natural entity where people live (rural or suburban) and it is neither governed by county or parish boundaries but must have a total population equal to or less than 6,000.
How do I setup a New Area?
All you need to do is:
- (1) Create the widest possible interest in your local community amongst the general public, agencies, community associations, sporting organisations, businesses, schools, youth clubs, etc to raise interest and gain support in creating a new Area (existing County Members will help you do this).
- (2) Create a Committee, each New Area needs a committee setup to proceed. This requires the following personnel; Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Development Officer. It’s important to allocate these roles to suit individuals who have the necessary skills and experience required to successfully fulfil the roles.
- (3) Once you have got these individuals in place, outline on a map the exact boundary of the Area you wish to setup.
- (4) Then contact your County Secretary (you can download these details from the Contact Details Section) and establish firstly that the Area you have is not or partly already affiliated to another Area nearby.
- (5) The next step is to complete the Affiliation Form (also available to download online) and submit to your County Secretary for acceptance by the County Executive Committee with the annual Registration Fee; this fee is €120 to be paid to National Community Games, which covers all members in your Area for Personal Accident & Public Liability Insurance.
- (6) There may also be a small administration fee levied by some counties, your County Secretary will be able to provide more information about this and advise you with any other queries that you might have.
- (7) All new Areas are encouraged to take up four activities in the first year.
- (8) We ask new Areas to get local young people between 6 and 16 years of age involved in both sporting and cultural activities – you can download out List of Events 2010 Brochure for full list of all activities.
- (9) All Areas a requested to hold an AGM each October.
- (10) We encourage Areas to ask parents / guardians to become involved at local level.
- (11) Insure that character references are carried out on all volunteers in accordance with the HSE Community Games Code of Conduct and the Irish Sports Council Code of Ethics & Good Practice for Children’s Sport and that all new volunteers adhere to the HSE Community Games Garda Vetting Policy.
How do I setup a lapsed Area?
All you need to do is:
- (1) Contact your County Secretary and ask for the contact details of previous Area members.
- (2) Then contact these members and ascertain if they wish to be involved with reviving the Area.
- (3) Next follow the steps above (How do I setup a new Area?) in consultation with your County Secretary and or Provincial Development Officer.
Area Committees and Purposes?
Interested adults come together and form a working Area Committee to organise activities for young people in their local community. Events are organised in accordance with the aims and rules of the HSE Community Games. The first task is to define the Areas size, to make for maximum involvement, giving each young person the opportunity to participate. In 2009 there were approximately 700 Areas affiliated to the HSE Community Games.
